puppy raiser
Young canine caretaker
A puppy raiser is a volunteer who cares for a future service dog during its first year or so of life, socializing and training the puppy before it returns to the organization for specialized work.
The role requires emotional resilience—puppy raisers know from the start they'll give up the dog they've raised: She's fostered six puppies for the guide dog program.
