punking

Deceiving for laughs

Punking is pranking or humiliating someone, especially in an elaborate or public way.

The term gained currency from the TV show *Punk'd*, where celebrities were set up in awkward situations: We spent the afternoon punking new employees with fake memos.

To punk someone originally meant to make a fool of them or assert dominance over them.
