public houses
Licensed drinking establishments
Public houses, usually shortened to pubs, are establishments licensed to serve alcoholic drinks for consumption on the premises.
The term is chiefly British, where pubs have traditionally served as neighborhood gathering places for drinking, conversation, and sometimes food.
We stopped at three public houses on the way home.
