proopiomelanocortin
Proopiomelanocortin is a large precursor protein that the body cleaves into several smaller hormones, including endorphins, ACTH, and melanocyte-stimulating hormone.
Often abbreviated POMC, it plays roles in pain regulation, stress response, skin pigmentation, and appetite.
Mutations in the POMC gene can cause obesity and adrenal insufficiency.
