prolegomena

Preliminary critical discussion

Prolegomena are introductory remarks or preliminary observations that set the stage for a larger work—a formal preface explaining what follows and why.

The term appears almost exclusively in academic and philosophical contexts: Kant's Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics.

The singular prolegomenon is rare; the plural dominates even when referring to a single prefatory text.
