proficiency tests

Competence measurement exams

Proficiency tests measure competence or skill level in a subject, especially language ability.

Unlike achievement tests that assess what was learned in a specific course, proficiency tests evaluate overall capability regardless of how it was acquired: She passed the English proficiency test required for university admission.

Common examples include the TOEFL for English and the DLPT for military linguists.
