preshrinking
Treating before sale
Preshrinking is the process of shrinking fabric before it's made into garments, so the finished product won't shrink further when washed.
Manufacturers preshrink cotton, wool, and other natural fibers that would otherwise contract significantly.
The treatment lets consumers wash clothes without worrying about fit: preshrunk denim, preshrunk cotton T-shirts.
