prentice

Craftsman's young trainee

Prentice is an archaic or literary shortening of apprentice—a person learning a trade under a master craftsman.

It survives mainly in surnames (Prentice, Prentiss) and occasional poetic use: a prentice hand at verse.

The full form apprentice has entirely displaced it in modern speech.
