preliminary examination

First evaluation stage

A preliminary examination is a formal test or assessment that precedes something more substantial.

In education, it's an exam taken before the main examination—often called prelims—especially qualifying exams for doctoral candidates.

In law, it's a hearing to determine whether enough evidence exists to proceed to trial: The judge ruled there was sufficient cause at the preliminary examination.
