preoperational

Pre-procedure developmental stage

Preoperational describes the stage before a child can perform logical mental operations, typically ages two to seven in Piaget's developmental theory.

Children in this stage think symbolically and use language but struggle with abstract reasoning, conservation of quantity, and seeing others' perspectives: preoperational thinking, the preoperational stage.

Outside psychology, preoperational simply means before an operation or before something becomes operational.
