pothunting

Illegal relic digging

Pothunting is the practice of digging for artifacts at archaeological sites without scientific method or legal permission—motivated by collecting or profit rather than scholarship.

The term comes from hunting for pottery and other relics to keep or sell.

In a separate sense, pothunting means competing primarily to win trophies rather than for the sport itself: He dismissed the tournament as mere pothunting.
