postmeridian

Past twelve o'clock

Postmeridian means occurring in the afternoon or evening—after the sun has passed its highest point in the sky.

The word is the formal counterpart to the familiar abbreviation PM: postmeridian hours.

It appears mainly in technical or deliberately formal contexts; most people simply say "afternoon" or "PM."
