post-natal depression

New mother's despair

Post-natal depression is a form of depression affecting mothers in the months following childbirth.

Symptoms include persistent sadness, exhaustion, anxiety, and difficulty bonding with the newborn.

It goes beyond the mild "baby blues" that many new mothers experience briefly.

The condition is treatable but often underreported due to stigma: She struggled with post-natal depression after her second child.

Also called postpartum depression, especially in American English.
