playback singing
Pre-recorded film singing
Playback singing is the practice of recording songs for films that actors then lip-sync to on screen.
The technique originated in Indian cinema, where playback singers became celebrities in their own right: Lata Mangeshkar was India's most famous playback singer.
The term distinguishes studio vocalists from the actors who mouth their words.
