musical numbers
Choreographed show tunes
Musical numbers are the songs and dances that punctuate musicals, operettas, and similar theatrical or film productions.
Unlike incidental music, a musical number typically advances plot or reveals character while being clearly set apart from dialogue scenes.
The term applies both to stage performances and their film adaptations: The show features twelve original musical numbers.
In casual use, any elaborate song-and-dance sequence in entertainment may be called a musical number, even outside traditional musicals.
