plasticizing

Making more pliable

Plasticizing is adding substances to materials—especially plastics, rubber, or concrete—to make them softer, more flexible, or easier to work with.

The term extends to any process that increases pliability: Heat plasticizes the vinyl, making it easier to mold.

A plasticizer is the additive that accomplishes this.
