pixellation
Visible square artifacts
Pixellation is the visible appearance of individual square pixels in a digital image, typically when an image is enlarged beyond its resolution or when video compression degrades quality.
The blocky, jagged effect obscures detail: The security footage was so pixellated you couldn't make out faces.
Pixellation is sometimes applied deliberately to obscure identity or nudity in broadcasts.
Also spelled pixelation.
