pirate flags

Buccaneer ship standards

Pirate flags are the black banners flown by pirate ships, typically featuring skulls, crossbones, or other menacing imagery.

The most famous design—white skull and crossed bones on black—is called the Jolly Roger.

These flags served to intimidate merchant vessels into surrender without a fight.

The ship raised its pirate flag as it approached.
