pimpernels

Small red wildflowers

Pimpernels are small flowering plants of the primrose family, typically with red, blue, or white blossoms that open only in sunny weather.

The scarlet pimpernel closes its petals when rain approaches, earning it the folk name "poor man's weatherglass." The name gained literary fame from the Baroness Orczy novel about a hero who signs his messages with a small red flower.
