pilot testing
Small-scale initial trial
Pilot testing is trying something on a small scale before full implementation.
A company might pilot test a new product in select markets, or researchers pilot test a survey with a handful of respondents to catch problems before the main study.
The goal is to identify flaws and make adjustments while stakes are low: We're pilot testing the app with fifty users before the public launch.
