pico-
Beyond nano, smaller
Pico- is a metric prefix meaning one trillionth (10⁻¹²).
A picosecond is a trillionth of a second, a picogram a trillionth of a gram.
The prefix appears in scientific contexts where measurements occur at extraordinarily small scales: The laser pulse lasted only a few picoseconds.
Informally, pico- sometimes just means tiny: a pico-portion of dessert.
