photo mosaic
Images forming image
A photo mosaic is an image composed of many smaller photographs arranged so that, viewed from a distance, they form a larger coherent picture.
Each small photo functions like a pixel, its average color contributing to the whole: The tribute was a photo mosaic of the actor's face made from thousands of fan photos.
Software typically automates the matching process.
