phreaking

Telephone system exploitation

Phreaking is the practice of exploiting telephone systems to make free calls or access restricted features.

The term emerged in the 1960s and 70s when hobbyists discovered that certain tones could manipulate phone networks—most famously, a 2600-hertz tone that granted access to long-distance switching.

Phreaking laid cultural groundwork for modern computer hacking, and "phreaker" remains in use for those who exploit telecommunications vulnerabilities.
