Peplums is the plural of peplum, a short flared ruffle or overskirt attached at the waist of a jacket, blouse, or dress: She wore a fitted dress with a peplum that flattered her figure.
The style creates an hourglass silhouette and cycles in and out of fashion.
Peplums also refers to a genre of Italian epic films from the 1950s and 60s featuring muscular heroes in ancient settings—so named for the draped tunics worn by characters.
