pen pals
Long-distance letter exchangers
Pen pals are people who maintain a friendship through exchanged letters, typically having met through a pen pal program rather than in person.
The practice became popular as a way for children to connect with peers in distant places: I had a pen pal in Japan when I was ten.
The term persists even when the correspondence is electronic rather than handwritten.
