pedestrian islands

Mid-street safe zones

Pedestrian islands are raised or marked sections in the middle of a roadway where people crossing on foot can pause safely between lanes of traffic.

They break a wide street crossing into manageable segments, allowing pedestrians to wait for gaps in traffic without standing in an active lane: The pedestrian island let her catch her breath before crossing the second half of the boulevard.
