pas
Dancer's basic unit
Pas is a step or dance movement in ballet, borrowed from French.
It appears in compound terms naming specific choreographic elements: pas de deux (a dance for two), pas de chat (a catlike leap), pas de bourrée (a quick connecting step).
Outside ballet contexts, pas occasionally means a right of precedence, as in the phrase yield the pas.
