paraxial mesoderm
Trunk segmentation source
Paraxial mesoderm is embryonic tissue flanking the neural tube that segments into somites—the precursors of the vertebral column, skeletal muscles, and dermis.
In developmental biology, it's distinguished from intermediate and lateral plate mesoderm by its position closest to the body's central axis: The paraxial mesoderm gives rise to the axial skeleton.
