para-athletes
Disabled sports competitors
Para-athletes are athletes with physical, visual, or intellectual impairments who compete in adaptive sports.
The prefix comes from "Paralympic," itself derived from "parallel"—sports running alongside the Olympic Games.
Para-athletes compete across disciplines from wheelchair basketball to blind judo: Para-athletes train just as rigorously as their able-bodied counterparts.
