oversock

Layer above hosiery

An oversock is a sock worn over another sock, typically for added warmth, cushioning, or protection.

Hikers and skiers sometimes wear oversocks to prevent blisters or provide insulation: I pulled on oversocks before lacing up my boots.

The term also applies to protective coverings worn over regular socks in clean rooms or medical settings.
