overshifted

Moved gears past

Overshifted describes something that has been shifted too far or too many times.

In driving, an overshifted transmission has moved to a higher gear than optimal: The engine lugged because I'd overshifted.

In typing, overshifted text results from holding the shift key too long, producing unwanted capitals or symbols.

The term appears in any context where shifting—mechanical, digital, or organizational—has exceeded the appropriate degree.
