overmodulated
Signal exceeds limits
Overmodulated describes an audio signal that has been pushed beyond its intended limits, causing distortion.
In radio broadcasting, an overmodulated signal exceeds the carrier wave's capacity, producing clipping and interference.
In music production, overmodulated tracks sound harsh or fuzzy: The vocals are overmodulated—turn down the gain.
Sometimes the effect is intentional for aesthetic purposes.
