overgeneralisation

Too-wide rule application

Overgeneralisation is drawing broad conclusions from limited evidence, or applying a rule too widely.

A child who says goed instead of went is overgeneralising the past-tense rule.

In reasoning, it means treating a few instances as universal: He had one bad experience and overgeneralised to all doctors.

Also spelled overgeneralization.
