overfire

Burn too hot

To overfire is to heat a kiln, furnace, or ceramic piece beyond the intended temperature, risking damage or distortion: The glaze blistered because we overfired the kiln.

In weaponry, overfire refers to a gun continuing to discharge after the trigger is released—a dangerous malfunction.

The term also appears in boiler operation, where overfiring means burning fuel at excessive rates.
