outkicking
Punting beyond coverage
Outkicking means kicking farther or better than an opponent or expectation.
In American football, a punter who outkicks his coverage sends the ball so far downfield that his teammates can't reach the returner in time.
The phrase outkicking your coverage has become a popular idiom for exceeding your abilities or station—especially dating someone more attractive than you: He really outkicked his coverage with her.
