outboxing

Fighting from range

Outboxing is a boxing strategy of fighting from a distance, using footwork and reach to land punches while staying out of range of an opponent's power shots.

A skilled outboxer controls the pace and position of a fight: He outboxed the slugger for twelve rounds.

The term extends to any situation where someone defeats an opponent through superior technique rather than brute force.
