one-way mirror

See-through surveillance panel

A one-way mirror is glass that appears reflective on one side but transparent from the other, allowing observers to watch without being seen.

Police use them in interrogation rooms; researchers use them to observe subjects unobtrusively.

The effect depends on lighting—the mirror side must be brighter than the viewing side.

Also called a two-way mirror, confusingly.
