old penny
Pre-decimal British currency
The old penny was a British coin worth one-twelfth of a shilling, used until 1971 when decimal currency replaced it.
The symbol "d" (from Latin denarius) distinguished it from the new penny: Bread cost sixpence—that's 6d.
Old pennies were larger and heavier than their decimal successors, and the phrase evokes pre-decimal Britain.
