off side
Past the line
Off side (also offside) in sports refers to a position where a player has moved ahead of the ball or a designated line before play allows it.
In soccer, being off side means a player is closer to the opponent's goal than both the ball and the second-to-last defender when the ball is played to them.
The rule prevents cherry-picking near the goal.
The goal was disallowed—he was clearly off side.
In American football, off side means crossing the line of scrimmage before the snap.
