In cricket, third man is a fielding position on the off side, behind the slips and near the boundary.
The fielder there is positioned to stop edges and deflections: He was caught at third man for twelve.
More generally, a third man is a go-between or intermediary in clandestine dealings—someone who facilitates without being the principal actor. (Capitalized Third Man usually refers to the film.)
