non-argument

Calm verbal interaction

A non-argument is a statement or exchange that fails to constitute genuine argumentation—either because it lacks logical structure, offers no evidence, or simply restates a position rather than defending it.

In philosophy and rhetoric, labeling something a non-argument dismisses it as unworthy of serious engagement: That's not a counterpoint, it's a non-argument.

The term also describes disputes that aren't really disputes—disagreements so trivial or based on misunderstanding that there's nothing substantive to debate: We had a non-argument about whether to leave at six or six-fifteen.
