nightriders

After-dark raiders

Nightriders were bands of white men in the American South who rode at night to terrorize Black people and their allies, particularly during Reconstruction and the Jim Crow era.

The Ku Klux Klan epitomized this practice.

The term extends to any group conducting nocturnal raids or intimidation: Nightriders burned crosses on the lawns of civil rights workers.
