naval convoys
Warship-protected shipping groups
Naval convoys are groups of ships traveling together under armed escort for protection, especially merchant vessels guarded by warships during wartime.
The convoy system defends against submarines, raiders, and aircraft by concentrating defensive firepower around vulnerable cargo ships: Allied naval convoys crossed the Atlantic despite German U-boat attacks.
The term also applies to any organized group of vessels moving together.
