naughties
Century's opening decade
The naughties (also spelled noughties) refers to the decade from 2000 to 2009, taking its name from the "nought" or zero that begins each year in that span.
The term follows the pattern of earlier decade nicknames like the sixties or eighties.
I was in college during the naughties.
British English favors noughties while American English more often uses naughties or simply "the 2000s."
