nameserver

Domain lookup machine

A nameserver is a computer that translates domain names into IP addresses, allowing browsers to find websites.

When you type a web address, nameservers look up where that site actually lives on the internet.

Organizations typically maintain multiple nameservers for redundancy: The primary nameserver went down, but the secondary kept the site accessible.
