mystery boxes
Contents unknown packages
Mystery boxes are products sold with contents unknown to the buyer until opened—a gamble on receiving items worth more than the purchase price.
Popular in online retail and gaming, they appeal to collectors and thrill-seekers: I spent fifty dollars on mystery boxes and got nothing but junk.
The format has drawn criticism for encouraging gambling-like behavior, especially when marketed to younger audiences.
