A singing telegram is a message delivered in person by a performer who sings the content, often in costume, typically for birthdays, anniversaries, or other celebrations.
The format emerged when telegram companies offered musical delivery as a novelty service.
Though actual telegrams are obsolete, the term persists for any hired performer who delivers a sung message: We sent her a singing telegram for her fiftieth birthday.
