musical cue

Performer's start signal

A musical cue is a passage of music written or selected for a specific moment in a film, television show, play, or other production.

Each cue is typically numbered and timed to synchronize with action or dialogue: The composer delivered forty cues for the episode.

In live performance, a cue can also be the signal for musicians to begin playing.
