mountain fog

Peak-shrouding vapor cloud

Mountain fog is clouds that form at or near ground level in mountainous terrain, reducing visibility and creating damp conditions.

It occurs when moist air rises along slopes and cools, or when low-lying clouds settle into valleys and passes.

Hikers distinguish mountain fog from ordinary fog because it can appear suddenly and disorient travelers: We got turned around in the mountain fog.
