misreader

Gets words wrong

A misreader is someone who reads something incorrectly—whether through carelessness, lack of comprehension, or willful distortion.

The term applies to literal misreading of text or figurative misreading of situations: He was a chronic misreader of social cues.

It can also describe someone who interprets a work in ways the author didn't intend.
